The Mad Hatter's Tea Party is an original acrylic painting on paper, created in 2016 and measuring approximately 16.5” × 11.5”.

I have always loved Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its wonderfully eccentric cast of characters. With this painting, I wanted to imagine the Mad Hatter’s tea party in my own way — colourful, chaotic and crammed with curious little details.

Alice sits with the Hatter, the March Hare and the Dormouse at a table overflowing with cakes, teapots, mismatched china and all manner of strange things. I loved filling the scene with tiny details, so that the longer you look, the more there is to discover.

For me, much of the joy of illustrating a story like this is being able to step inside a familiar imaginary world and make it my own.

A picture to get lost in for a little while.

This is the original, one-of-a-kind painting from which The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party fine art prints are produced.

Paintings of this complexity take me well over 100 hours to create. There is the initial research and drawing, but much of that time is spent slowly building up the painting itself — working in layers and using brushes as fine as 0000 to create the smallest details.

I have been painting and illustrating professionally for more than 30 years, and this slow, detailed way of working has become an important part of how I create my imaginary worlds.

The painting is mounted and presented in a white wooden frame measuring 16” × 20”.

The original is signed by me and will be supplied with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
